Classic of Mountains and Seas — Classic of Regions Within the Seas: The South, Scroll Ten


From the southeastern corner of the internal seas to the west:

The Ou people live in the sea. The Min people also live in the sea, and there is a mountain to their northwest. Another version says the Min Mountain is located in the sea.

The Three Heavenly Lords’ Barrier Mountain is west of the Min people, north of the sea. Another version places it in the sea.

The eight trees of Guilin are east of Fan Yu.

The Kingdoms of Bo Lü, Li Er, Diao Ti, and Bei Qu are all south of the Yu River. The Yu River flows from Xiangling to the South Sea. Another version calls it Xiang Lü.

The Xiao Yang Kingdom is west of Bei Qu. Its people have human faces, long lips, black bodies covered in hair, and backward-bent feet. When they see a person smile, they smile as well, holding pipes in their hands.

The Si, a creature resembling a cow, with a blue-black body and one horn, is found east of Emperor Shun's tomb, south of the Xiang River.

On Mount Cangwu, Emperor Shun is buried on the sunny side, and Emperor Dan Zhu is buried on the shady side.

The Fan Forest, spanning three hundred li, is located to the east.

The Si-Si, a creature that knows people by name, is an animal resembling a pig but with a human face, and it lives west of Emperor Shun’s tomb.

To the northwest of the Si-Si is the rhinoceros, which resembles a cow but is black.

Meng Tu, a minister of Xia Hou Qi, served the gods in Ba. When people came to Meng Tu with disputes, he would judge them, and those whose clothes had bloodstains would be apprehended. He worked west of Mount Dan. Mount Dan is south of Danyang, which belongs to the Danyang region.

The Yayu has the head of a dragon and lives in the Weak Water to the west of the Si-Si, and it eats people. It resembles a dragon's head.

There is a tree, resembling a cow, with bark like a ribbon or a yellow snake. Its leaves are like nets, and its fruit is like the luan. The tree itself is like the shrub known as xu. This tree is called the Jian Tree and grows over the Weak Water west of the Yayu.

The Kingdom of the Di people is west of the Jian Tree. These people have human faces but fish bodies and no feet.

The Ba Snake devours elephants and spits out their bones after three years. Gentlemen who wear these bones suffer no illnesses of the stomach or intestines. This snake is blue, red, and black. Another version calls it a black snake with a blue head, and it lives west of the rhinoceros.

The Mao Horse resembles a horse, with hair at all four joints. It is found northwest of the Ba Snake, south of the high mountains.

The Kingdoms of Xiongnu and Kaiti, as well as the Kingdom of Lieren, are all located to the northwest.
