Classic of Mountains and Seas — Classic of the Great Wilderness: The South, Scroll Fifteen


Beyond the South Sea, to the west of the Red Water and east of the Flowing Sands, there is a beast with heads on both sides, called Shuti. There are also three blue beasts, collectively known as Shuangshuang.

There is Mount A. In the middle of the South Sea, there is Mount Fantian, where the Red Water reaches its end. To the east of the Red Water is the Cangwu Plain, the burial site of Shun and Shujun. Here, one can find patterned shells, Li Yu, Qiujiu, eagles, Jia, Weiyu, bears, boars, elephants, tigers, leopards, wolves, and flesh-eating creatures.

From Mount Rong flows the Rong River. South of the Black Water is a black snake that feeds on deer.

There is Mount Wu, where the Yellow Bird travels westward. Emperor Yao, along with the Eight Immortals, resided here. The Yellow Bird governs the black snake on Mount Wu.

In the Great Wilderness, there is Mount Buting, where the Rong River ends. There are people with three bodies. The wife of Emperor Jun, Ehuang, gave birth to the Three-Body Nation, bearing the surname Yao. These people eat millet and command four birds. There are four surrounding abysses, with each corner flowing either to the north, connecting to the Black Water, or to the south, linking to the Great Wilderness. The northern abyss is called Shaohe Abyss, and the southern one is called Cong Abyss, where Emperor Shun once bathed.

Further, there is Mount Cheng, where the Sweet Water ends. The Kingdom of Ji Yu, descendants of Zhuanxu, eat millet. There is also the Kingdom of Feathered People, where the people are born with feathers. Additionally, there is the Egg People, whose people are born from eggs.

In the Great Wilderness, there is Mount Bujiang, where the Black Water reaches its end. There is also Mount Jia, from which the Qi River flows. There is Mount Yan, as well as Mount Dengbei. There is Mount Jiaojiao and Mount Pu, from which the Li River flows. Mount Wei contains cinnabar to the west and jade to the east. Further south is a mountain from which the Piao River flows. There is Mount Wei and Mount Cui.

There is the Kingdom of Ying People, bearing the surname Yu, who eat millet. There are also people who consume the leaves of trees.

In the Kingdom of Immortals, the people bear the surname A and eat the fruits of the Sweet Tree.

In the Great Wilderness, there is a mountain called Quzhi. In the southernmost reaches, the fruits ripen; in the north, they do not. These are known as the Quzhi fruits.

On an island in the South Sea, there is a god with a human face, wearing two green snakes as earrings and stepping on two red snakes. This god is called Buting Hu Yu.

There is a god named Yinyinhou, also known as Yinhu. The boastful wind is called Humin, and it dwells at the southernmost tip, where it governs the wind.

There is Mount Xiang and also Mount Chongyin. In the Kingdom of Jili, the people eat animals. Emperor Jun fathered Jili, thus the name Jili Kingdom. There is the Min Abyss. Shaohao fathered Beifa, who resided at Min Abyss. There is a body of water in all four directions, named Juntan.

There is the Kingdom of Xizhi People. Emperor Shun fathered Wuyin, who descended to reside among the Xizhi people. These people, bearing the surname Pan, eat grain, do not weave or work the fields, and wear clothes. They do not farm but consume what they gather. They love the birds that sing and dance, such as the Luan Bird that sings and the Phoenix that dances. Here, all beasts live together, and all grains are gathered.

In the Great Wilderness, there is a mountain called Rongtian, where the waters of the sea flow south.

There is a person named Zaochi. There is Mount Yu, home to the Kingdom of Yumin. The people of Yumin, bearing the surname Sang, eat millet and hunt the Yu creatures. There are people who use bows to shoot yellow snakes, known as Yu People.

There is Mount Song, home to a red snake called Yu Snake. There is a tree that grows on the mountain called Fengmu. Fengmu is the tree where Chiyou discarded his shackles, thus it became known as the Feng Tree.

There is a person with tiger teeth and a tiger tail, named Zuzhuang's Corpse.

There is a Kingdom of Small People called Jiaojiao, who bear the surname Ji and eat Jia grain.

In the Great Wilderness, there is Mount Aotu, where the Blue River reaches its end. There is Mount Yunyu, where a tree called Luan grows. Yu once attacked Mount Yunyu. There is red stone, from which the Luan tree grows. It has a yellow base, red branches, and blue leaves. The emperors gathered medicinal herbs from it.

There is the Kingdom of Zhuanxu, where Bofu was born. They eat millet. There is the Kingdom of Weasel People, who bear the surname You. There is Mount Tiao, Mount Zong, Mount Xing, Mount He, Mount Chen, Mount Dong, and Mount Bai. The Bai River originates here, flowing into the Bai Abyss, where the troops of Kunwu once bathed.

There is a person named Zhang Hong, who fishes on the sea. There is a country named after Zhang Hong, where the people eat fish and command four birds.

There are people with bird beaks and wings who fish in the sea. In the Great Wilderness, there is a person named Huantou. Gun’s wife, Shijing, bore a son named Yanrong, who fathered Huantou. The Huantou people have human faces, bird beaks, and wings, and they feed on fish from the sea, walking with the aid of their wings. They eat millet and plants like barley and willow. There is the Kingdom of Huantou.

Emperors Yao, Ku, and Shun are buried on Mount Yue. Here one can find patterned shells, Li Yu, Qiujiu, eagles, court officials, flesh-eating creatures, bears, boars, tigers, and leopards. The forest is filled with red wood and blue flowers, bearing black fruits. There is Mount Shen.

In the Great Wilderness, there is Mount Tiantai, a high mountain into which the waters of the sea flow.

Beyond the southeastern sea, between the Sweet Waters, lies the Kingdom of Xihe. There is a woman named Xihe who bathes the sun in the Sweet Abyss. Xihe is the wife of Emperor Jun and the mother of the ten suns.

There is Mount Gaiyou, where the sweet jujube trees grow. The branches and trunks are red, with yellow leaves, white flowers, and black fruits. Further east are the Sweet Flowers, with red branches and trunks, and yellow leaves. There are blue horses and red horses, named the Three Dappled Horses. There are also flesh-eating creatures.

There is the Kingdom of Small People, called Junren.

There is Mount Nanlei, where discarded jade, blue horses, three dappled horses, flesh-eating creatures, and Sweet Flowers are found. All kinds of grains grow here.
