Catching the Fox — Story

There was an old man with the surname Sun, who was the uncle of my in-law Qingfu. He was known for his courage. One day, while he was resting on his bed during the day, he suddenly felt as if something had climbed onto the bed. He then felt his body swaying as if he were floating among the clouds. He thought to himself, "Could this be a mischievous fox spirit?" Sneaking a look, he saw something about the size of a cat, with yellow fur and a green snout, wriggling from the foot of the bed, slowly crawling forward as though it was trying not to wake him. The creature carefully climbed onto his body—when it touched his foot, his foot went numb; when it touched his thigh, his thigh went weak. Just as it reached his stomach, Old Man Sun suddenly sat up, grabbed it with his hand, and held onto its neck tightly. The creature screeched urgently but could not break free. Old Man Sun quickly called his wife and tied a belt around the creature's waist. He then held the ends of the belt in his hands, laughing and saying, “I’ve heard that you’re good at transforming. Now I’m watching you—let’s see how you change.” Just as he finished speaking, the creature suddenly contracted its belly, shrinking it to the size of a thin tube, almost slipping away. Greatly alarmed, Old Man Sun tightened the belt even more. Then, the creature puffed up its belly again, making it as thick as a bowl and so firm that the belt couldn’t tighten around it. When Old Man Sun eased up slightly, the creature shrank once more. Fearing it might escape, Old Man Sun called to his wife to kill it quickly. Flustered, his wife searched frantically but couldn’t remember where the knife was. Old Man Sun turned his head to the left to signal where the knife was. When he turned back, he saw that the belt was now an empty loop in his hand, and the creature had vanished without a trace.
