The donkey tried to bolt the moment Mu Fan stepped forward to hold off the wolves, but Bai Shuo clung stubbornly to its tail. Although Mu Fan had given her a chance to escape, she didn’t run. Her eyes were glued to Mu Fan, her grip on the donkey’s tail unrelenting.
The donkey was on the verge of tears—this woman must be insane! She could escape and save herself, yet here she was, playing the saint!
“Xiao Bai! Run!” Mu Fan knocked a wolf aside, only to have another sink its teeth into his shoulder, drawing blood.
“I’m not leaving!” Bai Shuo’s eyes were red, her voice choked with tears. “If we’re going, we go together!”
“Bray! Bray!”
If you’re going to die, fine—but leave me out of it, you fool! The donkey brayed loudly, desperately wanting to speak. But Bai Shuo didn’t spare it a single glance, her gaze fixed only on Mu Fan.
Human strength has its limits. Despite his bravery, Mu Fan couldn’t hold back the relentless wolves. One of the wolves lunged, breaking his wooden stick in half, and kicked him to the ground with its powerful front legs.
Mu Fan tumbled heavily to the ground in front of Bai Shuo, his body almost entirely covered in blood.
“Brother Mu!” Bai Shuo screamed, grabbing onto him.
The donkey seized the chance to bolt, only to stumble and fall. Turning back, it looked at Bai Shuo with utter despair—Crazy woman! What’s wrong with you!
At some point, Bai Shuo had tied the donkey’s tail to her waist with a piece of cloth. As it tried to run, the weight of Bai Shuo and Mu Fan kept it from moving in any direction toward freedom.
“Xiao Bai, just… go… don’t worry about me…” Mu Fan murmured, his voice weak and his face as pale as death.
“No, I won’t leave you.” Bai Shuo pulled Mu Fan close, glaring fiercely at the approaching wolves. “You beasts! If you’re so brave, come get me!”
The wolves howled and leapt toward the two humans and the donkey. Bai Shuo’s eyes were filled with terror as their claws drew closer, but she stood her ground, resolute and unafraid. Mu Fan watched her small frame in front of him, and something flickered in his gaze.
Suddenly, a volley of arrows cut through the air, whizzing past with sharp, piercing sounds. The wolves let out anguished howls, each one struck down as they fell lifelessly to the ground.
Who? Who came just in time? Could it be my prayers were answered by an immortal?
Bai Shuo looked up in awe, only to see a group of familiar faces—the bandits from Mount Mu Xiao, holding swords and axes, with quivers of arrows strapped to their backs, surrounding them with expressions fiercer than the wolves.
Strangely, Bai Shuo felt a sense of calm. Maybe she should’ve picked a better time to leave the house today—what rotten luck.
“Boss! You finally came!” Bai Shuo leapt up, clinging to Zhang Chao’s pants with a look of utter relief. “I knew you hadn’t forgotten about me, Little Brother! To risk your life to save me, I’ll stay by your side, serve the Mu Family Village, and devote myself to you forever!”
They say fortune favors the prepared, and Bai Shuo was certainly someone who would fight for her life, no matter the odds!
Seeing Bai Shuo’s tearful performance, Zhang Chao’s mouth twitched as he tried to pull his leg away. However, her grip was firm, and he couldn’t break free, making his brows twitch in irritation.
Just as Bai Shuo was deep in her act, a figure suddenly leapt out from behind Zhang Chao, grabbing Mu Fan from the ground and throwing him down with force, a large blade positioned precisely against Mu Fan’s throat.
“Brother Mu!” Bai Shuo immediately stopped her act, letting go of Zhang Chao and running toward Mu Fan, only to be blocked by Zhang Chao’s axe.
