Ever Since I Bragged in Class About My Roommate—Who’s Cute, Stylish, Has a Big Butt, and Sneaks Into My Bed Every Night to Comfort Me (a Corgi)—My Childhood Friend Has Been Acting Weird — Part 2

“Anyway, about Kurumi being an amazing girl...”
“Right? My Kurumi’s the best! I swear, she’s the pinnacle of corgis!”
“Ah, and there it is. Dog-lover slipped up.”
“Ah.”

Yup, that was the game: just a group of dog and cat lovers having fun. The whole point was to talk about your pet as if they were human without giving it away.

“Man, you were so close to winning!”
“Ugh, I can’t believe I said it.”

It was all good fun among friends.

But ever since that day, Sayuki had started acting strangely.

…Why?

* * *

“Hey, Inukai-kun. About Kurumi… is she… cute?”
“What’s with the formal tone, Sayuki? Of course she’s cute! She’s the cutest in the whole world!”
“The whole… world…?”
“Uh, why do you look so down?”
“Am I… cute? Is she cuter than me?”

Her words sounded like something out of a ghost story, but I decided to answer anyway.

“Wait, did you really just call yourself cute? Well… I guess you are. But you can’t even compare yourself to Kurumi!”

“Can’t even… compare…?”

Sayuki looked devastated, tears brimming in her eyes, before dashing off once again.

* * *

“Hey, Inukai-kun…”

“What is it?”

“Um… about Kurumi… you mentioned before… Do you live together?”

“What kind of obvious question is that?”

“Obvious…?”

Sayuki’s shoulders slumped so dramatically it felt like I could hear a thud. Huh? Isn’t it obvious?

“Well, of course! She’s family, after all.”

“F-Family…? Were your parents… okay with it?”

Ah, right, my parents were against it at first.

“They were against it initially, yeah. But now, she’s part of the family.”

“Your parents… approve of her…?”

“Of course, they do.”

“Ugh…”

Once again, Sayuki’s tears welled up, and she ran off crying.

Is she okay? She’s been so emotionally unstable lately…

Also, isn’t she getting weirdly clingy?

* * *

“Inukai-kun, um… this is a bento. I-I tried making it. You see, I’m going on a picnic with friends soon, so… I thought I’d practice. C-Could you… try it for me?”

She stumbled over her words, visibly nervous.

“Sure, thanks. I didn’t have lunch prepared anyway, was about to head to the cafeteria.”

“R-Really? You do seem to go to the cafeteria every Wednesday…”

“Oh? You’ve been paying attention?”

“N-No! It’s just a coincidence!”

“Well, in that case, this ‘coincidence’ saved me. Thanks.”

“Y-Y-You’re w-welcome…”

“Why are you so flustered?”

“N-N-No reason!”

“… …”

“… …”

She was so embarrassed from fumbling her words that she bolted again.

The bento, by the way, was delicious.

* * *

“Uh, hey, Inukai-kun!”

“Oh, Sayuki… more bento practice? Not that I mind—it’s tasty.”

“Say… does Kurumi… ever make you lunch?”

“Huh? Nah, she doesn’t.”

Well, she’s a corgi, after all.

“I’m the one who makes her food.”

“You make… her food? You sound so close…”

“As long as she comforts me, that’s enough for me.”

“C-Comforts…? What kind of… meaning does that have?”

“Huh? What do you mean?”

“N-Nothing!”

And once again, she ran off crying. As she disappeared, her face looked like she was seconds away from shouting at the sunset like in some melodrama. What’s gotten into her?

She used to act all cool and aloof, but lately, she’s been like a walking mess.

* * *

“Inukai-kun…”

“What’s up? Wait, why are you so close to me?”

“Does it… bother you?”

“No, not really. It’s kinda nice, actually.”

“S-So you’re okay with… cheating…?”

“Wait, what?”

“Or is this not even… cheating to you?”

“Cheating? What are you talking about? Huh?”

“Ugh…”

And there she went, crying and running off again.

What the hell is going on?

* * *

“Inu… Inukai-kun!”

“Yeah?”

“I… I like you! I mean, I’ve liked you for a long time! I-I tried to give up, but… I couldn’t! We’ve been together as childhood friends for so long… I just couldn’t let go of you! I’m sorry! I know you already have Kurumi, and you live together, and she’s so amazing, and you even sleep together, but…!”

“Wait, what!?”

“I’m sorry, I’m horrible, aren’t I? So just… just reject me already! Please reject me!!”

Hold on. Hold on a second!

“I like you too, Sayuki! Why would I reject you!?”
