The Butterfly Lovers: Liang Shan Bo and Zhu Ying Tai — Story

During the Eastern Jin Dynasty, in Shang Yu County, Zhe Jiang, there was a beautiful and intelligent young lady named Zhu Ying Tai. From a young age, she longed to study, but because women were not permitted to attend school openly at the time, she disguised herself as a man and traveled to Kuai Ji County to pursue her studies. At the academy, she met a fellow student named Liang Shan Bo. The two quickly became inseparable friends due to their similar temperaments.

After three years of studying together, Zhu Ying Tai began to develop romantic feelings for Liang Shan Bo. However, Liang Shan Bo remained unaware of her true identity, seeing her only as a close and dear friend. When their studies concluded, Zhu Ying Tai had to return home. Before leaving, she hinted to Liang Shan Bo that she had a “ninth sister” and encouraged him to come to propose marriage. However, Liang Shan Bo did not understand her suggestion.

Upon her return, Zhu Ying Tai’s parents had already arranged her marriage to Ma Wen Cai, a wealthy young man. When Liang Shan Bo learned of Zhu Ying Tai’s true identity, he hurried to her home to confess his feelings, only to discover that she was already promised to another. Heartbroken, he returned to his hometown, where he eventually succumbed to illness, brought on by his sorrow and longing.

Zhu Ying Tai was devastated when she heard of Liang Shan Bo’s passing. On the way to her wedding with the Ma family, she insisted on visiting Liang Shan Bo’s grave. Standing at his grave, she expressed her deep sorrow and longing, and ultimately, overwhelmed with grief, she threw herself into the grave and died. It is said that after their deaths, they transformed into a pair of beautiful butterflies, flying together freely in the open sky, symbolizing their eternal love.
