Goodbye, Wild Weasel — Chapter 1 Part 5

“It’s because I’m always in love,” he said proudly.

“When can you start working?” he asked.

Unexpectedly, I landed my first job through dream interpretation.

As I stood to leave, I noticed four bottles of red wine behind the door, all famous Bordeaux vintages.

“I love wine. Some of these I bought years ago, and they’ve appreciated in value. Selling them to friends earns me a profit. I regret not buying a 1982 PETRUS back then—it would’ve been worth a fortune now. I can’t find it anywhere anymore.”

“You seem to enjoy collecting things,” I remarked.

“It’s not collecting—it’s investing. I only buy things I know I can sell later,” he said mischievously. “Once you start working here, I’ll teach you how to invest.”

“I don’t have money to invest,” I laughed.

“The best investment for a woman is in a good man,” he said.

I called Mai Lu Si to decline her offer and informed her I had accepted a position at Yun Sheng PR.

Meng Meng was surprised by my choice.

“Mai Lu Si really liked you. She praised you to my mom and thought you’d work for her.”

“Yun Sheng’s salary is 1,500 yuan higher than hers. I can send a bit more money to Xiao Jue for his living expenses,” I explained.

“So it’s for Xiao Jue? That’s touching. But what if he changes his mind?” Meng Meng asked.

“He won’t,” I said firmly.

“Does your dad know of any 1982 PETRUS?” I asked him.

“1982 PETRUS? That’s expensive! It’s going for 10,000 yuan now, and it’s hard to find,” he said.

The next day, my father called to say he found a bottle of 1982 PETRUS in a warehouse. It was originally reserved for a client who never paid.

“Give it to me!” I said.

On my first day at Yun Sheng, I brought the bottle of 1982 PETRUS with me.

Yun Sheng’s office was in Causeway Bay, with a staff of twelve, including the receptionist. Each PR consultant worked independently, only collaborating for large projects.

Two colleagues sat near me: one was Xiang Ling Ling, a stereotypical housewife, who called her Filipino maid every fifteen minutes to ask if her son had gone to the bathroom. If her son had a bowel movement every fifteen minutes, he’d be severely dehydrated!

The other colleague, Wang Zhen, was petite and frail-looking but very kind.

“My son hasn’t gone to the bathroom in two days,” Xiang Ling Ling said to me, frowning.

“How old is he?” I asked.

“He’s four years old and already this tall,” Xiang Ling Ling gestured to show me his height.

“He must be very cute,” I said, knowing every mother thinks their child is the most adorable.

“He’s absolutely adorable! Here, this is him,” she said, picking up a photo from her desk. Her little son was so chubby it was hard to distinguish his features—he was clearly naturally overweight.

“He really is cute,” I complimented.

Fang Yuan treated everyone to lunch to welcome me, proving himself to be a good boss.

After lunch, I returned to the office and went into his room. “Mr. Fang, are you looking for a bottle of 1982 PETRUS?”

“Do you know where to find one?”

“I have a bottle.”

His face lit up. “Where did you get it?”

“My father works at a wine shop, and this was the last bottle they had. I brought it here to see if you’d be interested.” I handed him the wine.

“Of course I’m interested! This wine will only appreciate in value. How much do you want for it?”

“Ten thousand yuan. Here’s the receipt—it’s already discounted.”

“I’ll write you a check right away,” he said.

Then he added, “There’s a task I need you to handle. You’re relatively inexperienced, and technically, I shouldn’t assign this to you. But I think it’s a great opportunity for you to learn.

“Recently, there’s been a rumor that ‘BeeComfort’ sanitary pads are infested with bugs. Some have even claimed that a woman used them and ended up with bugs in her uterus, leading to its removal. These are malicious lies. The distributor has already reported it to the police, but sales have plummeted. The distributor hired us to handle the crisis. Crisis management is a crucial aspect of public relations, and this is a chance for you to gain some experience.”
