As for Mina, despite Lambert’s grand declaration, it turned out she had yet to be officially recognized as a "beloved child of the spirits." While she did possess multiple gifts, her abilities fell short of the level warranting royal protection.
Her punishment was exile to the frigid northern reaches of the kingdom under the guise of "service work" for her attempted entrapment of a marquis's daughter.
Alice felt no pity for either of them. Mina, in particular, had been useful in her own way, but Alice harbored no goodwill or wishes for her happiness. As far as Alice was concerned, Mina could live her life as she pleased—just far away from her.
The second letter Alice received was from Lidio.
In it, he apologized for his sudden proposal, expressed gratitude for her acceptance, and filled the pages with concern for her well-being and declarations of his love.
As she read, Alice felt her heart swell with warmth and contentment. His affection was genuine, and his words deeply moved her.
The letter also included an invitation for another outing, which Alice readily accepted.
Alice joined Lidio in his carriage as they set off for a day in town. This was their third outing together. Both dressed in simple attire to avoid drawing attention.
“Thank you for inviting me again. It still feels like a dream to spend time with you like this,” Alice said with a gentle smile.
“I’m the one who’s grateful. Being with you like this is my greatest happiness,” Lidio replied warmly.
Their outings were always filled with happiness. Lidio’s natural compliments, attentiveness, and gentle consideration of her preferences made her feel cherished. He had even begun taking her on frequent outings after realizing her strained relationship with her family.
“My family situation is complicated too, so I understand how you feel. Don’t hesitate to share your burdens with me,” he had said, offering her his unwavering support.
His words and actions made her feel safe, no matter how dark her emotions might be.
“I can’t bear the thought of you feeling lonely in that house. I want to formally welcome you as my wife as soon as I inherit the duchy,” Lidio confessed.
“Thank you. I find no sadness in life because I have a future with you,” Alice replied sincerely.
As they walked through town, Alice began to wonder if she might soon see glimpses of their future together. Looking up at Lidio with a lighthearted feeling of anticipation, her thoughts were abruptly interrupted by a horrifying vision.
The ground was soaked in blood.
Lidio stood amidst the carnage, drenched in the blood of his enemies, his cold blue eyes gazing at the lifeless form of a red-haired man lying in a crimson pool. Around Lidio floated countless icy blades, and in his hand dripped a dagger stained with fresh blood.
It was the same vision she had seen before, save for a change in the setting and attire.
