Loving You Was the Best Thing I Ever Did — Chapter 4: Rock Sugar. Part 3

This time, Shen Xi Fan made an even more exaggerated expression of awe. “Wow! You’re so smart! How did you know I’m short on money and looking for a nanny job? How much will you pay me per month?”

As expected, the matchmaking attempt failed spectacularly.

Her mother scolded her all the way back to the hotel. While Shen Xi Fan felt triumphant inside, she outwardly pretended to regret the situation, wearing a somber expression. Her mother didn’t relent, continuing her tirade over the phone after returning home, until the phone battery died.

For the first time, Shen Xi Fan truly empathized with her father’s plight. So, the next afternoon, she went to the hospital with a newfound determination to “save a menopausal woman.”

Of course, her motives weren’t entirely pure. After all, picking up prescriptions didn’t guarantee a meeting with He Su Ye. Only by registering and waiting for a consultation could she see him, catch a glimpse of his dimpled smile, and hear his gentle voice. She knew it was silly, but half the reason was the charming doctor himself.

He Su Ye had grown accustomed to Shen Xi Fan’s visits. From insomnia to fever, he wouldn’t be surprised if she turned up with complaints about stomach pain, bloating, edema, or fatigue next. He didn’t bother hiding his dimple anymore, though he still maintained the air of a professional.

This time, Shen Xi Fan hesitated for ages, unable to articulate her reason for visiting. Perplexed, He Su Ye wondered what kind of issue was so difficult to talk about.

Finally, with a flushed face, she asked, “How do you treat menopause symptoms?”

He Su Ye blinked in surprise and flipped back to the front of her file. “Twenty-five years old? Early-onset menopause?”

“No, no, it’s not me. It’s my mom,” she quickly clarified, waving her hands.

“Oh,” He Su Ye nodded. “Why not bring your mother in directly?”

“I wouldn’t dare!” Shen Xi Fan grimaced, launching into a rant, forgetting she was speaking to He Su Ye. “My dad’s practically a voiceless peasant under her rule. I’m harassed daily by her nagging. No one in the house dares bring it up—it’s like living under a dictatorship! Imagine a woman chattering in your ear for hours, draining her phone battery with calls, and pulling random stunts to torment you. She’s even sabotaging me…” She paused, embarrassed. “Dr. He, am I talking too much?”

He Su Ye laughed, his eyes brimming with amusement. “Not at all. I just feel sorry for you—coming to the hospital to vent your frustrations.”

Awkwardly, she asked, “So… what can I do? Can you prescribe something?”

Shaking his head, he replied, “I can’t guarantee anything with medication, but I can suggest a couple of dietary remedies. For example, lotus seeds, longan, and rock sugar cooked into porridge are effective. Or black fungus and rice boiled together with diced dates and rock sugar. Both recipes help with blood pressure regulation, nourishing yin and the stomach, and replenishing energy.”

He grabbed a blank sheet of paper. “Let me write it down for you so you won’t forget.”

After handing her the note, Shen Xi Fan hesitated before asking, “Dr. He, what if someone catches a cold but hates taking medicine or getting injections?”
