Loving You Was the Best Thing I Ever Did — Chapter 20: Sanqi. Part 4

The evening celebration was even livelier and busier. Shen Xi Fan felt as though her legs might give out from standing too long, yet she forced herself to keep going. By the end, she looked down at her feet to find multiple spots rubbed raw by her heels, the pain making her wince.

As she hesitated over whether to take off her shoes, He Su Ye entered the room holding a small box. He sighed lightly. “Qiu Tian said your feet were rubbed raw, so I came to check.”

He knelt down and gently removed her shoes, his movements natural and professional, as though treating a patient. Shen Xi Fan didn’t notice the subtle intimacy of the moment, instead complaining with a tone of playful frustration that came off soft and endearing. Her pale, delicate foot rested on his knee, its injuries clearly visible.

He cleaned the wounds with a bit of alcohol, then took out a small bottle of brown powder.

“What is that?” she asked curiously.

“My grandfather’s creation—sanqi powder. It’s the main ingredient in Yunnan Baiyao.”

“Isn’t that the stuff for cuts, bruises, and external injuries?”

“Yes, but it also stops bleeding without leaving clots, and promotes healing. It can even treat coronary heart disease, angina, and post-stroke recovery.”

“Amazing! Give me some—I’ll use it whenever I get a cut.”

After applying the powder and covering the wounds with bandages, he inspected her foot again. “That’s it. It’ll heal in two days. Try to avoid wearing these types of shoes in the future—they…”

Before he could finish, Fang Ke Xin pushed the door open and froze at the sight before her. A moment later, she quickly closed the door.

“Ke Xin, what’s wrong? Do you need something?” Shen Xi Fan asked, puzzled.

Fang Ke Xin bit her lip, her hand gripping the doorknob so tightly that sweat seeped through. It was hard to tell if it was the heat or frustration. “They’re playing bridal games—Qiu Tian asked me to call you two over quickly.”

Without looking up, He Su Ye replied, “Got it. We’ll be right there.”

Shen Xi Fan sighed. “If I’d known, I wouldn’t have taken off my heels. Putting them back on now will be torture.”

Fang Ke Xin lingered silently by the door for a moment before Qiu Tian’s voice snapped her out of it. She left, but the image of what she’d just seen burned in her mind, like a thorn lodged in her heart that she couldn’t remove.

Why have I waited so long by your side—waiting for the past to fade, for the future to arrive—only to find that you and I are still worlds apart?

If only you could be kind to me, just a little. That would be enough for me to let go.

The bridal chamber was filled with boisterous cheer. Medical professionals often marry later in life due to their demanding and suppressive work environments, so whenever there was a happy occasion, they celebrated with unparalleled enthusiasm.

The newlyweds' room had been sabotaged by their mischievous friends, who set up a series of obstacles. Apples, dates, and cherries were strung along the way, and the bride and groom were required to eat their way through the trail. Li Jie and Su Shan, already exhausted and tipsy from drinking, were further teased and tormented until they were utterly worn out.

Finally, Li Jie lost his patience. With a raise of his thick brows, he pushed Su Shan into a corner, pressing her against the wall with his whole body. Turning to the rowdy crowd, he shouted, “If you’ve got any decency, leave now!” Then he sealed his words with a passionate kiss, sending the room into a frenzy.

Qiu Tian, lurking in a corner, sighed dramatically. “I’m too old for this level of fiery excitement. I’m going home to sleep—got surgery tomorrow. If I tick off my boss, I’m doomed.”

Hearing this, the others began bidding the couple farewell, though not without a few playful punches to Li Jie’s arm. “Good job, Li Jie!” they cheered.
