“Yesterday...” Wang Xin scratched her head. “Yesterday, you said you already knew he’d probably reject you. When I ran into him after school, I casually mentioned, ‘Su Wan already understands.’ Just now, when I asked him why he didn’t call you last night, he said, ‘Since she already knows, there’s no need for me to say anything more.’”
Su Wan’s expression froze for a moment. “I ‘knew’...” Her voice cracked as she continued, “I ‘knew,’ but that’s just me guessing! How could he not tell me directly? He didn’t even bother calling to say he wasn’t going to call me!” Tears began welling up in her eyes.
Wang Xin wiped her forehead nervously. “Do you even hear what you’re saying right now...?”
Seeing Su Wan’s mounting frustration, Wang Xin tried to console her. “Why don’t you just go talk to Li Chengran yourself? He’s right here, it’s not like he can run away.”
“He’s already rejected me. What else is there to say?”
Su Wan slumped over her desk. “I’m doing my homework.”
* * *
Su Wan was heartbroken over her failed confession, but the flood of assignments and endless exams soon swept her away. The hectic schedule carried on until graduation.
On the night of their final exams, the whole class got drunk.
Su Wan hugged Wang Xin and sobbed, “I won’t see you anymore—I won’t see you anymore!”
Wang Xin hugged her back, equally tearful. “I’ll always remember you—I’ll always remember you!” It felt like a life-and-death farewell, even though their homes were only three bus stops apart.
That night, Li Chengran sat quietly in a corner, drinking with his friends. After crying herself out, Su Wan sat at another corner, watching him. Whenever Li Chengran drank a glass, she drank one too. When he stopped, she stopped. When he smiled, she smiled. When he sighed about parting ways, she furrowed her brows along with him.
Though rejected, Su Wan realized, at that moment of separation, that her feelings for him hadn’t faded. She still liked him—silently, from a distance. Li Chengran was simply too good, and she felt she could never reach him.
After too many drinks, Su Wan was tipsy.
She thought that after tonight, she might never see Li Chengran again.
At 2 a.m., they all left the karaoke bar. Su Wan, ignoring Wang Xin, quietly followed Li Chengran and his friends as they walked down the street. She trailed behind them for two blocks until one of Li Chengran’s friends, swaying slightly from the alcohol, noticed her. “Su Wan!”
