We Cannot Be Friends — Chapter 1: The Code Game of a Listed Company. Part 4

Ke Fei opened the restroom door and pushed me toward the mirror. Over the years, as my relationship with Hao Yi grew steadier, my makeup had become progressively lighter. I didn’t bother with fake lashes, sometimes even skipped filling in my eyebrows, and would just dust on some powder before heading out. My wardrobe shifted to simple and comfortable pieces, far from the glamorous styles of the past.

But now, under Ke Fei’s touch, I saw a completely different version of myself in the mirror—a version radiating allure and confidence.

“Wonder what Hao Yi would say if he saw you like this?” Ke Fei teased with a grin.

I smiled back. The bold neckline of the dress made me unconsciously straighten my posture, and for the first time in a long while, I felt a surge of self-assurance.

“I admire your loyalty, but for the next few hours, forget about Hao Yi. Pretend he doesn’t exist. Remember, you’re single during this time—use your charm to the fullest!”

As soon as we entered the private room and took our seats, Ke Fei immediately transformed into the queen of mixers. She greeted and chatted effortlessly with the five or six new faces in the room. Unsurprisingly, with a group of employees from publicly listed companies gathered, the icebreaker topic was stock codes. People introduced themselves using their company’s trading numbers and filled the room with corporate gossip.

“2498? Are you guys releasing a new phone? Is it any good?”

“Well, I still prefer iPhones, haha. Which company are you with?”

“This is a rising star from 2451. You guys work in Neihu too, right? Get acquainted.”

“Nice to meet you, but I’m leaving the company next month. It’s way too intense—don’t even think about joining.”

“Where are you heading next?”

“Still looking. I’ve been interviewing with a few foreign companies lately. Better benefits, more leave days…”

This kind of chatter filled the gathering, as the group of strangers bonded over industry tidbits.

Ke Fei had strategically seated me directly across from the 2891 guy she’d spent the night with, making it easier for me to “take him away” later. Tonight’s dinner had one clear purpose for Ke Fei: to introduce me, her “fake single” friend, to a high-quality man. But I knew the truth—this so-called quality man was actually Ke Fei’s real target. My role was to feign disinterest in the quality guy while pretending to be unexpectedly drawn to 2891. I had to flirt shamelessly, captivate him, and eventually lead him out of the room, all to give Ke Fei the opportunity to pursue her dream guy.

However, the so-called dream guy was fashionably late. Everyone had been eating for twenty minutes, and he still hadn’t shown up, leaving me stuck in limbo with no chance to act.

“Ugh, I even brought my best girlfriend tonight to introduce her to a potential boyfriend, and your handsome friend still hasn’t appeared! If she ends up alone, you’ll have to take responsibility!” Ke Fei, clearly impatient from waiting, turned the pressure up on 2891 guy.

“He just texted me; he’s at the door now.” 2891 guy checked his phone, using the moment to angle for an advantage. “Ke Fei, if you’re introducing someone, shouldn’t they be sitting across from each other? How can they chat properly with me in the way?”

Ke Fei saw right through his intentions but had her own polished response ready. “That’s too deliberate—it would make her shy! Diagonal seating feels more natural.” Poor 2891 guy didn’t realize he was merely a pawn in Ke Fei’s carefully orchestrated arrangement.

Just then, the door to the private room opened, and a deep male voice rang out: “Sorry I’m late. My boss held me up before I could leave.”

I couldn’t help but take a closer look at the so-called "dream guy" Ke Fei was raving about. What kind of extraordinary man could he possibly be?

The man standing before me was undeniably handsome. His face was chiseled with sharp, strong features. The tailored suit he wore, crafted from high-quality fabric with a faint sheen, accentuated his impeccable style. Yet, what caught my attention wasn’t his charm—it was that his face looked increasingly familiar.
