We Cannot Be Friends — Chapter 14: An Unexpected Visitor. Part 4

“Oh!” I finally remembered. Clearly, since I wasn’t actively planning a wedding, small details like this had completely slipped my mind. “But I don’t see you carrying them either?”

“They’ve been sitting in Ke Huan’s car since the photoshoot. Just wait a bit; he’s on his way.”

What?! Does this mean I’ll have to see Chu Ke Huan in a moment? This wasn’t part of the script I imagined!

“Uh, isn’t that a bit inconvenient? It’s fine, really…” I fumbled for an excuse to decline, cursing myself for agreeing to meet Gao Zi Yuan today.

“It’s no trouble! Ke Huan’s already on his way. There are a lot of props—you probably wouldn’t be able to carry them all on your own. Isn’t Hao Yi coming to pick you up?”

“Uh, not today…” I replied cautiously, starting to wonder just how many props she had bought. I couldn’t help but feel concerned about how much this had cost Chu Ke Huan.

“Oh, sorry, I forgot to mention this earlier… How about this? I’ll ask Ke Huan to give you a ride home.”

I wished Gao Zi Yuan would stop being so considerate. She was like an innocent child playing with a loaded gun, oblivious to the danger around her. She didn’t realize her goodwill could ruin not only my life but also her own. At this point, I wasn’t even sure who I was fighting for as I desperately tried to avoid disaster.

“Ah? No need! I can get home by myself, really,” I said, making a last-ditch effort to escape. “And he has to drive you home too, right? That’d be too much trouble…”

“I live nearby! I was planning to walk home anyway. I’m serious—there’s no way you can carry everything alone…”

So, not only would I have to face Chu Ke Huan, but I’d also be stuck alone with him in his car. Who was this scenario trying to torture?

I’d eaten the meal, played the part of the temporary ally, and fleeing at this point wasn’t an option. All I could do was stand there with a dumb smile, watching helplessly as Gao Zi Yuan called Chu Ke Huan, updated him about the plan, and casually passed me off to her “new best friend.” It was like a surreal comedy skit that I was powerless to stop.

Until the moment Chu Ke Huan’s car arrived, I could remember everything I discussed with Gao Zi Yuan. But in that instant, my mind went completely blank—likely as a survival mechanism. If I’d held on to even a shred of rational thought, I might have done something drastic.

In a trance-like state, I watched myself climb into the passenger seat of Chu Ke Huan’s car, as though I were a ghost observing from outside my body. When I waved goodbye and thanked Gao Zi Yuan through the window, I had the absurd feeling that I was the mistress of this car. The entire situation was so ludicrous it was almost laughable. After all, I’d gone to great lengths to reject a man who wanted to betray his fiancée by sleeping with me, only for that very fiancée to personally send me into his car, to be alone with him. Not only that, but now he was about to find out where I lived.

What kind of twisted gravity was this, that no matter how many times I ran, I kept ending up right back in front of Chu Ke Huan?

“I understand how you feel. I think it’s ridiculous too,” Chu Ke Huan said, breaking the silence once Gao Zi Yuan had left. His voice snapped me back to reality. “But here’s some good news: the dashcam records everything we say in the car. At least you don’t have to worry about me saying anything inappropriate.”

“Don’t bother explaining. Just admit this was all part of your plan,” I replied, utterly dejected.
