We Cannot Be Friends — Chapter 28: A True Choice. Part 1

“Are you sure you want me to be the witness for your wedding?” Ke Fei asked, twirling a pen as she glanced at the marriage registration form spread out on the meeting table.

“We’re not having a banquet, and if anyone else in the office finds out I’m getting married, I’ll have to deal with endless explanations. You’re the obvious choice,” I said, glancing at my watch. Our lunch break was down to less than an hour. “Just sign it! Hao Yi’s waiting for me downstairs.”

Ke Fei uncapped the pen, ready to sign, but then paused, looking up at me. “Why haven’t you signed it yourself?”

“I only got the form this morning. I haven’t had a chance. And when I got to the office, it was one thing after another…” I replied, trying to sound casual, though I felt a twinge of guilt.

The section for the bride’s signature was entirely blank, though Hao Yi’s and his mother’s signatures were already neatly in place.

“What kind of excuse is that? You’ve got time to sit here chatting with me but not to sign your name?” Ke Fei capped the pen again. “Hey, you and that guy from 2882—”

“It’s over,” I cut her off immediately. “We’re not in contact anymore.”

“So you two… still didn’t do it?”

“I knew you’d ask that! No, we didn’t!” I said firmly, delivering the rehearsed answer.

Everything from the past is like yesterday’s death; everything ahead is like today’s birth. From the moment I left that hotel room last week, I decided to lock away what happened that night as a secret, bury it deep in my heart, and move forward without ever looking back.

Ke Fei raised an eyebrow.

“What? You don’t believe me?” I asked.

“No, I believe you. It’s just… what a waste. He’s so handsome, great body, and judging by my estimates, his size must be—”

“Stop!” I cut her off, waving my hand. “Are you signing this or not? Hao Yi’s still waiting downstairs.”

“Fine, fine!” Ke Fei signed her name in the witness section, handing the form back to me. “This is my first time being a witness for someone’s wedding. Congratulations.”

“Are you congratulating me on getting married or on having the honor of making you my witness?”

“Well… whatever you think it is!” she said, fluttering her eyelashes playfully.

I tucked the form into my bag and gave her a big hug. “Thank you.”

“Oh my! Wei Wei, why are you so sentimental today? Or did you realize right before registering your marriage that I’m actually the love of your life? I don’t normally go for women, but for you, I might reconsider!”

“You’re crazy!” I laughed.

“You know, you can still back out before the marriage is official!” Ke Fei teased again, raising her voice as I let go of her.

Just then, my phone rang. It was Hao Yi calling to say he’d arrived downstairs.

“I need to go. Let’s hope the household registration office isn’t too crowded. If I don’t make it back in time for the afternoon meeting, cover for me,” I said, picking up my bag.

“Got it. And don’t forget to sign your name! I don’t want to end up as the witness to your husband marrying someone else,” Ke Fei joked.

I smiled but didn’t respond, leaving the meeting room.
