We Cannot Be Friends — Chapter 3: Shared Interests Don’t Always Mean Friendship. Part 1

The first thing I did when I woke up the next morning was check my phone—emails, messages, Facebook, and every other social app—just to confirm that there were no further messages from Chu Ke Huan. Only then did I breathe a sigh of relief. As far as I was concerned, yesterday was dead and gone, and today was a fresh start.

But my good mood didn’t last long. On my way to work, I remembered something unresolved from the night before.

I’d left the mixer early, and Chu Ke Huan had left too. How did the rest of the evening play out? Did the mixer spiral completely off track? Ke Fei, who had been ready to feast on her “dream guy,” might have ended up starving through the night. Could she have spent her lonely hours at a hotel cursing me under the covers? Her uncharacteristic silence—no messages all night—only solidified my suspicion that I’d be bombarded with her grievances as soon as I got to the office.

“What are you spacing out for? You’re going to be late—hurry up and get inside!”

Ke Fei’s voice snapped me back to reality.

I turned to see her, looking as energetic and cheerful as ever. There wasn’t a hint of resentment on her face, which left me thoroughly confused.

“Get in the elevator already! We’re going to be late!” she said, noticing my hesitation. Without waiting for me to move, she grabbed me and shoved me inside.

As the elevator doors closed, I studied Ke Fei carefully, trying to gauge her mood. But no matter how hard I looked, I couldn’t detect even a trace of anger.

“What’s with the staring? Why are you looking at me like that so early in the morning?”

I kept my eyes on Ke Fei, unsure how to broach the topic or from what angle to approach it. Finally, I decided to test the waters cautiously: “So... last night... what happened with you guys?”

“What else? We did it.” Ke Fei shrugged nonchalantly, her expression utterly indifferent.

“You and Chu Ke Huan?! You slept together?! How is that possible?!” My mind was spinning. If they’d really hooked up, then who was the man who chased after me last night, buttoned up my blouse, and spoke so calmly? Was I talking to a ghost? The thought was almost too eerie to bear.

“What do you mean, ‘how is that possible’? Of course, it’s true!” Ke Fei’s grin turned teasing, her face lighting up with unmistakable satisfaction. “Let me tell you, he’s one of a kind—unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. Perfect body, incredible stamina. As for length and width? No need to mention it—I could tell just from looking at his face that he’s not someone whose ‘size’ I could manage with one hand. If I were his girlfriend, I’d never go to work—I’d just tie him to the bed and drain him dry every day!”

“This is the office! Don’t be so outrageous!” I could feel my face flush red as her vivid description made my heart race.

“What’s the difference? There’s no one else around!”

What about the security cameras? If the guards monitoring the feed could read lips, how was I supposed to face my colleagues after this?

“Are you sure it was really Chu Ke Huan you slept with last night?”

“Zhou Wei Wei, you’re already clocked in—time to act like the professional you are! Stop talking about such indecent things. Isn’t the Q3 product meeting at 9:30? I need to prep my materials. I’ll tell you the juicy details over lunch!” Ke Fei winked at me before strutting off to her desk.

The product meeting lasted three hours, but I couldn’t focus at all. Ke Fei’s words kept replaying in my head.
