Fish Pancake — Part 6

Just as she was hesitating, her phone rang. She thought it might be Yu Bing Bing, but when she saw the number, it wasn’t him. “Hello, Ninth Brother.”

“Xiao Feng, is Old Eight with you? Why isn’t he picking up my calls?”

“He went home.”

“The landline isn’t being answered either,” Zhong Rui Feng sounded a bit anxious. “Could something have happened?”

“What?” Lin Xiao Feng was startled, immediately imagining the worst—had he collapsed the moment he entered his home, or worse, fainted in the elevator? His parents weren’t in town, and he lived alone in a rented apartment. If something had really happened, there would be no one to help him. She quickly said, “Ninth Brother, don’t worry! I’ll go check on him right away—I’m near his place.”

Zhong Rui Feng hung up the phone, and the group in the car couldn’t hold it in any longer, bursting into fits of laughter. Only Zhang Qian Zhi remained composed, tapping the seat and holding up a finger. “Shh—keep it down—”

Sure enough, a few minutes later, the taxi returned with Lin Xiao Feng. She got out and rushed into the apartment’s lobby without a second thought.

Lin Xiao Feng didn’t overthink it. As soon as she exited the elevator, she rang the doorbell, but there was no response. She knocked on the door, still no answer. Now she was really panicking. Fortunately, she knew the door code, so she keyed it in and went inside.

The apartment was dark; no lights were on. She remembered the switch was on the wall near the entryway, so she reached out to find it. Before her hand could touch the switch, someone grabbed her from behind, wrapping their arms tightly around her waist. Her instincts kicked in, and she attempted an over-the-shoulder throw, but the person was faster, twisting her arm and holding her firmly in place. She opened her mouth to scream, but something warm covered it—

Scene Break — Total Darkness, Only Breathing Sounds Heard

She tried to scream, but a warm hand clamped over her mouth, silencing her. Hot, almost scalding breaths brushed against her ear. The more she struggled, the tighter the grip became. Finally, the person leaned close to her ear and whispered, “Don’t make a sound.”

The hand remained over her mouth. She let out a few muffled whimpers, which he seemed to understand. Slowly, he moved his hand away.

Lin Xiao Feng whispered into his ear, “What’s going on?”

“There’s someone outside.”

“Before I came upstairs, I saw a car parked near the flowerbed below.”

“Did you see the license plate?”

“It was covered, but I think the last number was a 9.”

“A 9? What kind of car?”

“A black Mercedes.”

“It’s them, no doubt.”

“Who are they?”

“Who else—Old Nine and Old Five!”

“What do they want?”

“To make fun of us!”

Lin Xiao Feng shivered. “Why would they want to make fun of us?”

“They think we’re… Anyway, Old Nine must’ve been tricked by Old Five. Old Five’s the stingiest of us all. When he got married, we hid over twenty ***** in his bridal chamber, so he’s been waiting to get back at us ever since.”

“You hid *****!”

“Shh! Keep your voice down!”
