I Was Cursed with One Year Left to Live, So I’ll Live as I Please — Part 6

The sound of the waves continued, uninterrupted. Sophie thought that even after she was gone, this sound might offer Lorenz some solace.

“What’s wrong?”

When Lorenz glanced over at her, he noticed Sophie turning her face away. Realizing she was crying, he handed her a handkerchief.

“Hehe, sorry about this. I was just thinking how happy I am. Eating delicious food and listening to the waves like this…it made me tear up.”

“You don’t have to put on a brave face.”

“...I’m scared.”

“Yeah.”

“Honestly, I’m scared.”

“I’ll find a way to fix this. Trust me and wait,” Lorenz said, pulling her into a gentle embrace as she let out soft sobs.

Sophie wasn’t optimistic enough to believe that something could truly be done in the little time she had left. But just hearing those words lightened her heart.

* * *

Ten months had passed since Sophie was told she had one year to live. By now, she could barely get out of bed and spent most of her time lying down.

“Are you alright?” Lorenz asked.

“Oh, Lorenz, you came to visit me? Entering a lady’s bedroom, though...but I suppose it doesn’t matter anymore. Forgive me for my disheveled appearance.”

Sophie’s room in the duke’s mansion was strikingly barren for a noblewoman. She had sold most of her belongings, saying she no longer needed them.

“I get to read as much as I like now. Isn’t that wonderful? Poor Lorenz, you’re so busy with your studies and work,” she teased, grinning playfully as she showed him the book she was reading. Lorenz let out a sigh, half in exasperation, half in relief.

“I brought your favorite apple tart as a gift. Or would you have preferred another book?” he asked.

“Apple tart? Perfect choice! Thank you so much!” Sophie exclaimed joyfully, reaching eagerly for the plate Lorenz prepared for her.

“I’d love to read one of your recommended books, but…I think I’ll pass. I wouldn’t want to fall asleep wondering about the ending,” she said, smiling wryly.

“Sophie…”

“It’s hard to explain, but…it feels like a black mist is spreading inside me. At first, it was faint, but now it’s thick and circulating through my body. I don’t think I have much time left.”

Sophie spoke with a calm, matter-of-fact tone. Lorenz had been preparing himself, too. Given her condition, he knew this moment was inevitable.

“Lorenz, it’s alright to forget about me.”

“What are you saying?”

“…I lied. Please, just every now and then, even if it’s only occasionally, remember me. That way, I can keep living in your memories.”

“Don’t be ridiculous. I’ll remember you every day.”

“You mustn’t. You should treasure your future fiancée instead.”
