“Let’s leave Juliana out of this for now. What’s this about annulling our engagement? I’ve never agreed to that.”
“Oh, how flattering. But this isn’t about doing something for your sake. With less than a year left to live, I want to live freely. I want to go where I please, eat what I want, and do as I wish.”
Sophie had worked tirelessly to be a suitable queen for Lorenz. Her days were filled with lessons, social engagements, and efforts to polish herself for the role. Though she didn’t dislike it, it was a heavy burden for someone like Sophie, who was naturally easygoing. Unlike Juliana, who excelled in everything, Sophie often struggled and was frequently scolded. She knew people whispered behind her back that she wasn’t fit to be Lorenz’s queen. Sophie herself was aware of her shortcomings and understood that her noble birth was her only qualification for the role.
Despite all this, she had persevered because she admired Lorenz. He had accepted her as his fiancée, and she wanted to be useful to him. Even if his heart wasn’t with her, she had resolved to do her best for his sake.
Sophie thought perhaps it was her arrogance that led to her curse. Instead of stepping aside, she had selfishly wished to remain by Lorenz’s side. But now, she realized that clinging on would only cause trouble. It was time to let go.
“I can no longer become a queen, so instead of studying for that purpose, I’d like to do what I truly want. Would you allow me this selfish wish?”
Though Sophie smiled softly, her eyes showed a determination that left no room for compromise. She might appear gentle and airheaded, but once she made a decision, she would not waver. Knowing this, Lorenz sighed in defeat.
Sophie took his reaction as consent. “Thank you…”
“I’ll join you.”
“…What?”
“I’ll go along with what you want to do. Of course, I have responsibilities, so I can’t be there for everything.”
Sophie stared at Lorenz in surprise.
“But…”
“I’m not annulling our engagement. Not for your sake, but for mine. I can’t have people saying I abandoned my cursed fiancée or that staying with me might get someone cursed. That kind of reputation would be troublesome.”
“Ah, I see.”
“Officially, we’ll say you’re unwell. That way, it’s understandable if you withdraw from social events. And if…”
Lorenz paused, taking a deep breath.
“If you die in a year, I’ll be seen as the devoted man who supported you until the end. That would be more convenient for me. So the engagement stays.”
