My Beautiful Sister and Me — Part 10

“You’re so useless! You’re the eldest daughter—take responsibility! Honestly… Well, fine. But don’t you feel inspired by your beautiful sister to prepare something for your mother’s birthday?”

“If I did, I wouldn’t be able to send money. Would you prefer that?”

“Tch… fine. As if I’d want a gift from someone with no sense of taste. Forget it!”

“…Understood. By the way, Mother, I’ve reached adulthood now—”

“And? Marriage? Handle it yourself. Don’t expect a dowry. Figure it out.”

“I understand…”

With an irritated huff, she stormed out without even paying for what she’d eaten.

“…How unrefined,” I muttered to myself. “Very well, I’ll take care of myself.”

Clutching the receipt, I paid the bill and left the café.

When I met with Adeline, I told her about our mother’s demands to put her at ease, and together, we continued with our preparations.

“What else do we need…?”
“We can buy it when the time comes, don’t worry.”
“You’re right, Sister…”

Seeing her anxious and apologetic expression, I gently stroked her hair and gave her a reassuring smile.

“Don’t worry. I’ve already submitted the application.”
“I’m so sorry… truly… for causing you so much trouble because of me.”

“If you say that again, I’ll get angry, you know? You’re my amazing, one-and-only little sister. Even you shouldn’t insult yourself like that. Otherwise, I might have to make you cry like when we were kids and tickle you until you apologize!”

“No! Stop! I’m sorry!”

“My, my, it seems this child still doesn’t understand despite how many times I’ve told her,” I sighed dramatically, shaking my head with mock exasperation. Adeline gave a small laugh and corrected herself.

“Sister, truly, thank you. I love you!”
“Oh, Adeline, it seems we’re of the same heart! I’m so happy. Now, no more tears, okay? The big day is just around the corner.”
“Yes!”

We exchanged smiles, and with excitement for the future, continued making our plans.

* * *

On the day of Adeline’s graduation, I secretly attended to see her moment of glory. I would have proudly attended openly if not for the possibility of encountering Mother, but such was life.

Standing proudly as one of the graduates, Adeline looked absolutely adorable, her cheeks faintly blushing.

When her name was called, she walked up to the stage with a dignified air, accepted her diploma, and bowed. Suddenly, an out-of-place round of applause broke the silence—of course, it was Mother. Adeline gave an embarrassed nod before descending from the stage.

What was Mother even trying to achieve?

Afterward, Mother and Adeline returned home briefly to change for the graduation party. Meanwhile, I waited nearby at an inn, ready to join them later.
