“When I was little, I always dreamed of having a righteous and loyal mafia boss as my boyfriend!”
“Exactly! He’s too handsome!”
Yun Jia felt like she was going to faint. What was wrong with these girls? A group of elegant university students, swooning over the mafia like this.
Finally, under the intense pressure from her dormmates, she had no choice but to call Lou Wan.
Lou Wan sounded quite pleased to hear from her. “What’s up?”
“Our dorm wants you to treat us to dinner. This Saturday evening. Are you free?” Before he could answer, she quickly added, “If you’re busy, just forget it.”
“No, no, I’m free, of course I’m free,” Lou Wan replied enthusiastically. “What do you guys want to eat? I’ll have someone book a place.”
Frustrated, Yun Jia covered the phone and asked her dormmates, “What do you all want to eat?”
“Anything!”
“Yeah, anything’s fine!”
“Whatever works!”
Yun Jia sighed. Women in a lovestruck frenzy were simply impossible to reason with. She relayed to Lou Wan, “They said anything. You decide.”
“Got it!” Lou Wan agreed without hesitation. “I’ll come pick you all up!”
Lou Wan really took this event seriously. On the weekend, he brought along a driver and arrived with a luxury van to pick them up. The dorm, which was usually as noisy as 2,000 ducks, suddenly turned into four shy quails. Each girl wore a modest smile, blushing as they followed Yun Jia out in a single file, completely unlike their usual chatty selves.
Lou Wan spared no expense, treating them to a lavish seafood feast. Throughout the meal, he modestly described it as “simple food, nothing fancy,” repeatedly apologizing for the lack of hospitality. Yun Jia, having shared countless meals with him over the years, knew this dinner’s cost could easily cover her entire year’s tuition. As she watched him attentively serving her dormmates food and drinks with flawless manners, she cursed him in her heart for being so fake. If she didn’t know his history over the last ten years, she might have believed he was truly a gentleman.
What an act!
Halfway through the meal, the atmosphere finally warmed up. The dorm girls shed their initial nervousness and began firing off questions. One girl even dared to ask Lou Wan to demonstrate some gambling tricks. Lou Wan only smiled and said, “I don’t gamble.”
“Why not?”
“I made a promise to someone—I swore to them I’d never gamble again.”
“Wow!”
“Gasp!”
“Oh my god!”
…
All Yun Jia could hear was the collective sound of breathless excitement. Every girl in the dorm was now gazing at Lou Wan with heart-shaped eyes. Her roommate Wan Wan clutched her hand, trembling with excitement. “Oh my god, oh my god! This has to be such a touching story! A gambling king gives it all up for a woman—how romantic!”
