A deep, magnetic voice filled with amusement spoke from the side, and a hand suddenly reached out to wrap around her waist.
A flash of disgust flickered through He Lan Xue’s eyes, but it disappeared just as quickly. She softened, leaning into his embrace with a delicate, pitiful air. “Lu Lang.”
Lu Jiu lifted her chin. “You’re bold—daring to use me like that.”
He Lan Xue’s expression stiffened slightly, but she forced a smile. “What are you talking about? I don’t understand.”
“You wanted to provoke him, but it seems you used the wrong method,” Lu Jiu said casually before lowering his head and planting a kiss on her cherry lips. “I was curious about what kind of man you’d be willing to take such a risk for. Turns out it’s just a mere ice demon. I thought you had better taste—I suppose I misjudged you.”
He Lan Xue bit her lip and said nothing.
Lu Jiu tilted his head slightly. “Aren’t you afraid I’ll deal with him?”
He Lan Xue’s voice turned cold. “You’d better not provoke him, or you’ll regret it.”
Lu Jiu narrowed his eyes. “And just how do you plan to avenge him?”
He Lan Xue sneered. “You already know who he is.”
“What does his background have to do with me?” Lu Jiu said carelessly. “Do you really think I’m jealous over this? I just didn’t expect that, for his sake, you’d actually dare to go after Wen Xin. He is a man of immense virtue and fortune—aren’t you afraid of divine retribution?”
He Lan Xue’s tone was indifferent. “Since you already knew, why did you tell me how to enter the formation?”
Lu Jiu’s smile was as pleasant as a spring breeze. “This time, you truly outplayed me. At the time, I had no idea what you were planning. I thought you just wanted to sneak in for a look—or maybe even seek out a master for yourself.” He raised an eyebrow and added, “That little girl is fairly pretty, I’ll give her that. But as for that ice demon, I just don’t see what’s so special about him. Even a noble young master of the Northern Fox Clan can’t compare?”
He Lan Xue didn’t answer, only smiling seductively. “Didn’t you already suffer a setback at that girl’s hands? Don’t you want to get a taste of her?”
Lu Jiu licked her earlobe. “She’s just a mere mortal—how could she ever compare to the pleasure of you and me cultivating together?”
He Lan Xue closed her eyes, her chest rising and falling as she whispered, “You’ve never tasted her—how can you be so sure?”
“Humans and demons walk different paths. Unlike you and me, who are both of the demon race, she’s best left alone.” Lu Jiu suddenly pulled away, turning to look in the direction where the two had disappeared, his gaze flickering with intrigue. “That girl… she really is interesting. I’ve always found something strange about her.”
He Lan Xue’s eyes shifted slightly. “What do you mean?”
Lu Jiu seemed deep in thought. “It seems my future brother-in-law knows her.”
He Lan Xue was puzzled. “Isn’t your sister an immortal? Then your brother-in-law should be a god as well—how would he recognize her?”
Lu Jiu sighed. “That’s exactly what I find strange.”
He Lan Xue asked, “Hasn’t your royal father arranged a marriage for you?”
Lu Jiu replied, “I must first attain immortality.”
He Lan Xue smirked, her expression tinged with disdain. “Foxes are naturally lustful—no wonder you couldn’t help but run off. Your father is determined for you to ascend, but unfortunately, you can’t compare to your sister.”
Lu Jiu spoke lazily, “Our Nine-Tailed Fox Clan is hardly something you can measure against. I was born with three tails, and I’ve cultivated for two thousand years already. In another four thousand, I can directly ascend to the rank of high immortal. Unlike those who spend centuries bitterly cultivating just to become scattered immortals [wandering celestial beings without a fixed place in the heavens], I can afford to have some fun in between. I just don’t want to cause any real trouble.”
He Lan Xue covered her mouth with a laugh. “You’re afraid of your father, aren’t you?”
